How to Crop a T-Shirt: 3 Easy Methods (with and without Sewing)
Is your favorite t-shirt too long? There's no need to buy a new one or visit a tailor. With a few materials and a little patience, you can shorten it yourself at home. In this article, we'll explain three methods for shortening a t-shirt, from the simplest to the most professional.
Before you begin, we want to remind you of something: if you have a Minimalism Brand t-shirt, you probably won't need to shorten it. Our t-shirts are designed with a perfect length—neither too short nor too long—intended to flatter any body type. But if you have another t-shirt at home that you want to rescue, keep reading!
Method 1: Shortening a T-shirt Without Sewing (with Scissors)
This is the fastest method and you don't need any sewing skills. It's ideal for knit or cotton t-shirts, as these fabrics don't fray.
What you'll need:
- Sharp scissors
- Chalk or fabric marker
- Ruler or tape measure
Steps:
- Put on the t-shirt and mark the desired length with pins or chalk.
- Take it off and lay it flat on a surface.
- Measure and mark a straight line with the chalk at the desired height.
- Cut along the line with the scissors.
- If you want a more distressed effect, you can make small vertical cuts along the edge.
Result: The edge will be slightly rolled outwards, which is normal for knit fabrics and gives a nice casual finish.
Method 2: Shortening a T-shirt by Hand Sewing
If you want a cleaner and more durable finish, hemming is the best option. No sewing machine is needed.
What you'll need:
- Scissors
- Needle and thread in the color of the t-shirt
- Pins
- Iron
Steps:
- Mark the desired length and cut, leaving an extra 2 cm for the hem.
- Fold the edge inwards 1 cm, then another 1 cm, and secure with pins.
- Iron the hem to make it flat.
- Sew with an invisible stitch or blanket stitch along the hem.
- Remove the pins and iron again to set.
Result: A clean and professional finish, almost identical to the original factory one.
Method 3: Shortening a T-shirt with a Sewing Machine
If you have a sewing machine, this method is the fastest way to achieve a professional result.
Steps:
- Mark and cut the desired length, leaving a 2 cm seam allowance.
- Fold the edge inwards twice (1 cm + 1 cm) and secure with pins.
- Sew with a straight stitch or a stretch stitch (zigzag) if the fabric has elasticity.
- Iron the result for an impeccable finish.
Tip: Use elastic thread if the t-shirt is made of cotton with lycra, so the hem doesn't break when stretched.
Which method to choose?
It depends on the result you're looking for and the time you have:
- No sewing: quick, casual, perfect for 100% cotton t-shirts.
- By hand: more careful, no machine needed.
- With machine: the most durable and professional.
