How to Crop a T-Shirt: 3 Easy Methods (with and without Sewing)
Is your favorite t-shirt too long? There is no need to buy a new one or go to a tailor. With a few materials and some patience, you can shorten it yourself at home. In this article, we explain three methods to shorten a t-shirt, from the simplest to the most professional.
However, before we start, we want to remind you of something: if you have a Minimalism Brand t-shirt, you probably don't need to shorten it. Our t-shirts are designed with a perfect length—not too short and not too long—thought out to fit any body type well. But if you have another t-shirt at home that you want to rescue, keep reading!
Method 1: Shortening a t-shirt without sewing (with scissors)
This is the fastest method and you don't need any sewing skills. It is ideal for knit or cotton t-shirts, as this fabric does not fray.
What you need:
- Sharp scissors
- Tailor's chalk or fabric marker
- Ruler or measuring tape

Steps:
- Put on the t-shirt and mark the length you want with pins or chalk.
- Take it off and lay it out on a flat surface.
- Measure and mark a straight line with the chalk at the desired height.
- Cut along the line with the scissors.
- If you want a more distressed effect, you can make small vertical cuts on the edge.
Result: The edge will roll slightly outwards, which is normal for knit fabrics and gives a very nice casual finish.
Method 2: Shortening a t-shirt by hand sewing
If you want a cleaner and more durable finish, sewing the hem is the best option. You don't need a sewing machine.
What you need:
- Scissors
- Needle and thread matching the t-shirt color
- Pins
- Iron

Steps:
- Mark the desired length and cut, leaving 2 cm extra for the hem.
- Fold the edge inward by 1 cm, then another 1 cm, and secure it with pins.
- Iron the hem so it lies flat.
- Sew with a blind stitch or blanket stitch along the hem.
- Remove the pins and iron again to set.
Result: A clean and professional finish, almost identical to the original factory one.
Method 3: Shortening a t-shirt with a sewing machine
If you have a sewing machine, this method is the fastest way to get a professional result.
Steps:
- Mark and cut to the desired length, leaving a 2 cm margin.
- Fold the edge inward twice (1 cm + 1 cm) and secure with pins.
- Sew with a straight stitch or elastic stitch (zigzag) if the fabric has stretch.
- Iron the result for an impeccable finish.

Tip: Use elastic thread if the t-shirt is made of cotton with lycra, so the hem doesn't break when stretched.
Which method to choose?
It depends on the result you are looking for and how much time you have:
- Without sewing: fast, casual, perfect for 100% cotton t-shirts.
- By hand: more careful, no need for a machine.
- With a machine: the most durable and professional.
